This chest of drawers is a frameless-style cabinet with about 41¾″ of free space for drawer boxes. Free space is the open area in a cabinet that can be used for drawer boxes.

Generally, drawer boxes require 1″ of clearance above and below the box. Between drawer boxes there should be a 2″ space, as well as 1″ of space above the top box and 1″ below the bottom box. However, the bottom box free space can be filled with the cabinet's baseboard because there would be nothing but space and it's not required to remove or operate the drawer box. This is a general rule, and leaves extra room for a little adjusting if required.

This chest of drawers has about 41¾″ of open area, which includes a part of the bottom board thickness. I've installed five drawer boxes, which means I need a total of 10″ of clearance (2″ between each box and 1″ above the top, as well as 1″ below the bottom drawer) that can't be used for drawers. Subtract the 10″ hardware clearance from the free space height of 41¾″ and we are left with 31¾″. This remaining space can be occupied by any total height of five drawer boxes. In this project I've reduced the bottom drawer box height by ½″ to get a little more space.

Drawer faces can be roughly calculated at a height of 2″ greater than the drawer box for material estimation purposes. However, the easiest method is to install the drawer boxes and measure the drawer face heights needed on the cabinet. The drawer height sizes may have to be altered slightly for a visual balance of the faces. After I installed the drawer boxes, I tried a few combinations and arrived at the sizes shown in the material list.
